Nov 23, 2020 · After the Winchester 1892 was made, there were 44-40 high velocity loads. These loads were only to be used in 1892 rifles and newer. They were too powerful for the weak toggle link action of the 1873. I was able to find some reloading info on them in some very old reloading manuals. They are ballistically equivalent to the 44 magnum.

I shoot lighter loads, I don;t like beating up my 45's and I shoot twice a week at my local range, so I do burn up some ammo. You could Taylor a load just for that carbine. Those hornady bullets are great in factory loads, but if you buy some of the blemished bullets from Midway, they won't feed through the rifle or work in the revolver. I shoot way more mid speed mellow loads than I do full on loads, but 2400 is definitely my favorite for true 44 Mag. I'd start at 18.0g with a 240gr and ladder up slowly watching for pressure. Power Pistol is surprisingly decent at below max speeds, it also exhibits quite a display. It comes in .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .454 Casull, with each respective variation also able to load and fire .38 and .44 Special and .45 Colt. Blue Dot is an old tried and true powder, used for years in 357 and 44 Mag pistol loads as well as magnum shotgun loads. Blue Dot is a product of the Alliant Powder Co. I spoke with Ben Amonette of Alliant powders (1-800-276-9337, ext. 3) and they still produce the same line of tried and true powders. Higher pressure loads in the 45-70 in the encore are brutal.
